Project Title:

Trading Secrets in Wakefield

Year:

2008-09

Client or Initiator:

Role:

Artist and Community Engagement

Working with lead artist, Gordon Young, we devised and undertook a program of public consultation in order to gather inspiration for creating artworks for this new development.

Based on the Wakefield Mystery Cycles – medieval plays that were performed on the back of wagons around the town, we decided to investigate the modern-day ‘guilds’ of the town and find out their secrets and special knowledge or ‘trade secrets’. We visited several groups that we felt contributed to the uniqueness of Wakefield and interviewed them, documenting our research through images, video and words. We then ran a public event from an old market stall, offering the secrets we had gathered in exchange for new ones.
